Hell isn't real. It never was. Actually, even from a Biblical perspective there is no reality of hell. It is a construct that was developed to manipulate & control people by an elitist class that was willing to do anything to preserve power. Proximity to power has long been a driving force for the worst atrocities we have ever seen. Desperation is the cause of the most visible atrocities, however.
This is intentional.
By expanding the disparity of wealth and creating enclaves of desperate people whose very basic needs are not being met, casual violence is spread as folks succumb to the lack of humanity being shown to them. The criminal justice system as it exists in America is essentially an effort at farming folks for labor & then criminalizing poverty so that if folks refuse to act according to the corrupt & exploitative system, they can be moved to facilities to work for less pay.
Meanwhile, those in proximity to power- and mostly out of a deeply held belief in the scarcity of that power- commit human rights violations casually with no repercussions. That is because the "Justice" system does not actually have a vested interest in preserving anything resembling actual justice. It exists to protect wealth & preserve the disparity to uphold the power structures in place by finding ways to funnel the powerless into labor camps (prisons) or into structured employment (building capital for the powerful with a marginal increase in personal gain and the illusion of freedom that living outside of prison engenders)
Ultimately, the best effort we have at building the proverbial Kingdom of God on earth that is talked about in scripture is in choosing to dedicate our lives to a sort of reckless authenticity. That is to say, it is in creating the most aligned & ethically informed version of ourselves while committing to the pursuit of freedom & expression of every other human being. To that end, we'd best to choose "Hell" - to choose the equitable wasteland where pleasure (reviled by Evangelicalism) is prioritized but not at the risk of the other (as it so often is in Evangelical circles) but in conjunction with protecting & preserving the experience of pleasure for the other.
Together, we will build a world that is more equitable, where everyone feels more free to follow their bliss through the winding roads of the expansive & immersive human experience. We will create freedom where there is oppression, we will forge relationships where there is othering, & we will choose to honor our differences and fall in love with one another- upholding the dignity of one another's lives in the amber fields of our shared existence.
